Helping the elderly stay fit and active is a key focus at the Tower One/Tower East senior living community in downtown New Haven, and local contractor KBE Building Corporation (KBE) (www.kbebuilding.com) is helping the organization achieve that goal. The Farmington-based commercial construction firm has donated $50,000 to the Tower One/Tower East assisted living community's Wellness Initiative.

The Tower One/Tower East Wellness Initiative, which provides several activities and programs for seniors, was created in 2012. Residents of the Towers are able to participate in such activities as an arthritis exercise class and Tai Chi, along with memory groups, a nutrition program, transition groups, and a fall prevention program - which includes home safety screenings, where a professional occupational or physical therapist visits the resident's apartment and discusses and resolves unsafe features. The Towers also provide a caregivers group for family members or other carers of the resident.

"We are very excited to provide the Towers Foundation with this donation," said Mike Kolakowski, Principal and CEO of KBE Building Corporation. "This money will support the Wellness Initiative in its first few years, and will help to implement many health-conscious programs in the Tower One and Tower East communities."

KBE's donation was given in honor of the company's 50 Ways to Make a Difference initiative. Launched in 2009 to celebrate KBE's 50th year in business, the program formalizes the construction company's 50+ year legacy of charitable giving, and focuses on providing support for children, seniors, and military personnel. The annual program is funded by significant corporate donations, personal donations from the firm's three owners, and donations and volunteer time contributed by KBE's 120+ employees. KBE has also donated its professional services on a number of not-for-profit and community projects
