Banding together in a show of compassion and generosity, ten bay area taekwondo schools and Mountain View Christian Center are hosting the Kick-A-Thon For Humanity to benefit the Platt family, recently struck by the young father's untimely death. On October 16th, students from each school, and those new to the sport, will throw as many kicks as possible in a two-minute period with sponsors making a financial donation based on that amount. The Kick-A-Thon will include performances by dance, rap and drama groups. Rapper MC Hammer will make an appearance and will be awarded the World Wide Humanitarian Award for his care and works throughout the world helping to make a difference in Business, Entertainment, Church and Family.
John Platt, 38 years old, was diagnosed with cancer three months ago and died September 15th. His wife, Florence, and two young children, Ryen and Kayla, are now in serious danger of losing their home and business. Both children will participate in the Kick-A-Thon to honor their father. Ryen will be celebrating a birthday the same day.
Master Johnny Kang of Kang's Taekwondo Academy pulled together the support of nine other schools to initiate this one-of-a-kind fundraiser. Along with the resources and charitable spirit of Mountain View Christian Center, Master Kang created the event so kids, parents and others could help those in need, despite the poor economy, in an exciting manner.
"I have kids of my own and can only imagine what the Platts are going through right now," says Master Kang. "I'm pleased this event will help them on a financial level. But I'm just as pleased so many kids, families and individuals can come together, compassionately and generously, in support of our fellow man. It's a profound lesson for the kids and an extraordinary act of love."
The Kick-A-Thon For Humanity will be held at the Mountain View Christian Center at 5000 Amaryllis St., Oakley, CA 94561, starting at 10 AM, October 16th. Everyone is welcome to attend the event free of charge. Any children who would like to participate in the fundraiser can pick up a sponsor sheet at Mountain View Christian Center or Kang's Taekwondo Academy (check www.martialartswalnutcreek.com for locations.) Vendors may take part for a donation to the Platt family.
