Knauf Insulation In The Frame For Thermal Performance
With the changes to Part L of the Building Regulations now firmly in place, developers are seeking high quality insulation products that will enable them to fulfill the strict new requirements.
Online, June 26, 2012 (Newswire.com) - For this reason, Knauf Insulation's Earthwool Timber Frame Party Wall Slab and FrameTherm Slab glass mineral wool insulation has been installed in a new development of timber frame properties in Bournemouth.
Commissioned by Bournemouth Council, the project consists of eight bungalows, nine houses and a community centre, situated in the Bradpole Road area of the city. Searching for an insulation solution that would efficiently meet the necessary
U-values, contractors Allwood Timber Construction, were impressed by the excellent thermal performance delivered by Knauf Insulation's timber frame products.
Steve Griffiths, Managing Director of Allwood Timber Construction, commented: "The main reason we specified Knauf Insulation's products is that they enabled us to achieve a zero effective (0.0W/m2K) U-value on the party wall by fully filling the cavity. An additional bonus is that, as a non-combustible material, it provided fire compartmentation during the construction phase of this project. By fully filling the cavities, they provide an extra level of fire protection in addition to the usual fire stops installed in timber frame buildings.
"Although I was familiar with Knauf Insulation's products before this project, this is the first time we have used these particular solutions. We are very happy with their performance and have adopted them for use on other builds."
Earthwool Timber Frame Party Wall Slabs are a full fill thermal and acoustic solution for timber cavity party walls that are installed in the party wall cavities during the timber frame erection. The slabs are applied to the cavity face of one skin of the party wall with a tack-adhesive and compressed within the cavity when the other skin is erected. The product can be used as part of a full fill solution to achieve a zero effective U-value within SAP 2009, which is used to calculate energy consumption for 2010 Building Regulations - Approved Document L (England & Wales) and Technical Handbook Section 6 (Scotland).
FrameTherm Slab is for the thermal insulation of external walls in timber frame construction and is friction fitted between studs. The product is manufactured to a width of 570mm wide to suit commonly used stud spacings. Friction fitting means the products fully fill the void between timber studs leaving no gaps that can lead to unwanted heat loss. Delivering excellent acoustic and fire performance, both products are classified as Euroclass A1 to BS EN ISO 13501-1 and are manufactured in accordance with BSI Quality Assurance Standard BS EN ISO 9001: 2000, and Product Standard EN 13162.
Councillor Robert Lawton, Cabinet Member for Housing and Environment, at Bournemouth Borough Council said: "We are focused on providing warm, energy efficient homes and so our commitment is to finding manufacturers and suppliers who can help us achieve this goal. We are very pleased with the Timber Frame supplied by Allwood incorporating insulation supplied by Knauf Insulation and the contribution it has made to this project.
