Kombucha by Donation (KBD) is announcing the launch of their innovative program that combines healthy lifestyle choices with social entrepreneurship to raise money and awareness around the importance of organic food and a nutritious diet. The program employs a unique pay-what-you-can business model where consumers are encouraged to "donate" for a serving of kombucha. KBD suggest $0.20 per ounce, but any donation big or small will be accepted. All proceeds are "re-donated" to charities that support educating children on the importance of healthy diet and exercise as well as charities that support the creation of a sustainable, organic food system.

KBD will provide delivery and pick-up of kegs of kombucha to like-minded businesses, like yoga studios, fitness centers, spas, holistic centers and health conscience corporate offices throughout NYC. Customers of these businesses can "purchase" kombucha by filling their cups, water bottle, or thermos with kombucha from the KBD keg. A secure money box is attached to the KBD keg to collect donations. KBD will also collect donations online from people nationwide that want to support the program with an overall goal of "re-donating" $25,000 during the inaugural year.

Kombucha by Donation (KBD) is officially launching its innovative program at Nourishing NYC's gallery fundraiser, The Art of Eating Well, on July 28th from 6-9 p.m. Nourishing NYC strives to achieve the mission of "Nutrition for All" through a three-pronged approach of feed, educate and advocate. Their organization addresses both poor nutrition and health and the issue of food scarcity and hunger. Nourishing NYC's socially responsible approach to better nutrition in NYC reflects the same approach and goals of Kombucha by Donation. The site of the launch, The Art of Eating Well fundraiser, will include wine, sake and kombucha tastings, art viewing and a silent auction.

"We are proud to be hosting the event that launches KBD," says Nourishing NYC CEO Gina Keatley, "Our mission is to alleviate the strong correlation between low-income status and poor dietary health. A key step to defeating the obesity epidemic in this country is making healthy products available to everyone and we share KBDs commitment to this goal."

Kombucha is a sweet and sour, slightly fizzy, healthy alternative to soda made by fermenting tea. During the process of fermentation it becomes instilled with probiotics. Probiotic literally means "for life," and refers to microorganisms in food and drinks that have similar qualities to the helpful bacteria naturally living in our bodies. When consumed, probiotics can break down sugars in food to make them easier to digest, can boost the immune system, and can aid in our bodies' absorption of nutrients.

"We believe in organic, sustainable food so strongly, and know that others do to, which is why we started Kombucha by Donation. In reality, it's less of a donation and more of an investment in the future of food," says co-founder of KBD, Mike Brady, "we hope that the money we raise from KBD will drive changes in the ways and types of food produced in this country so that in a few years everyone will understand the importance of selecting healthy, organic products."

KBD encourages New Yorker's to attend The Art of Eating Well and sample their kombucha. Those who cannot attend the event are encouraged to look for KBD kegs starting July 2011 in your favorite healthy businesses throughout NYC starting in July or make an online donation. KBD is still looking for partners to participate in the inaugural year of the program. Please contact [email protected] to discuss participation in the program.
