Korean and Finland Teens Are Top Readers

Fifteen-year-olds in Korea and Finland are tops in reading, test results released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development indicate.

PARIS, (UPI) -- Fifteen-year-olds in Korea and Finland are tops in reading, test results released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development indicate.

The two countries had the strongest performance on a two-hour reading literacy test administered to half a million students in more than 70 economies, the OECD said Tuesday.

They were followed by 15-year-olds in Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, New Zealand and Japan.

The results were included in the OECD's annual PISA survey of education performance intended to help countries see how their school systems match up globally.

Students were tested in mathematics and science as well as reading.

The Chinese province of Shanghai, which took part in the survey for the first time, topped the table in math and science.

Strong gains in reading literacy were made in Chile, Israel, Poland, Portugal, Korea, Hungary and Germany, the PISA survey said.

The survey also studied the differing results between boys and girls.

Test results show girls read better than boys in every country by an average of 39 points or the equivalent of a year of schooling.
