Large-Scale Nutrition Study Offers Guidelines for Reducing Risk of Premature Death

Results suggest that following simple recommendations could significantly increase longevity and lower overall healthcare costs.

A recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that following simple guidelines established by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) could significantly reduce the risk of dying prematurely.

The guidelines included: being as lean as possible without becoming underweight, being physically active as part of everyday life, limiting consumption of energy-dense foods, avoiding sugary drinks, consuming mainly plant-based foods, limiting consumption of red meat and processed meat, and limiting alcoholic beverages.

The researchers examined data from 378,864 participants in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition Study, which enrolled men and women between the ages of 25 and 70 between 1992 and 2000. Both male and female participants were scored on their adherence to the WCRF/AICR recommendations. Over 12.8 years, 23,828 deaths occurred. Among participants whose scores were highest, the risk of dying during the follow-up was 34 percent less than those whose scores were lowest. The reduction was greatest for respiratory diseases, followed by circulatory diseases and cancer.

"The results of this study suggest that following these simple recommendations could significantly increase longevity and lower overall healthcare costs," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). "It is extremely important that people are aware of these results in order to start incorporating these simple recommendations as well as understanding how as individuals we can do our part to reduce the currently out-of-control and rising healthcare costs here in America."
