Latina Financial Summit & Bootcamp Aims to Empower Latinas to Build Wealth and Invest

In recognition of National Financial Literacy Month, Mi Dinero Mi Futuro, the Los Angeles Commission on the Status of Women, and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti's Office of Economic Development are hosting the Inaugural Latina Financial Summit & Bootcamp, focused on economic empowerment and building wealth in the Latino community.

“Our city only succeeds if everyone has an equal shot at success, and I want Los Angeles to lead in empowering all our residents," said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.  "Events like the Latina Financial Summit & Bootcamp help Latina Angelenos acquire the knowledge and tools they need to build a more prosperous life, benefiting both their families and our city."

The Free community event, to be held April 25th at Los Angeles City Hall at 9:00 a.m., will feature a keynote by Ana Guerrero, Mayor Garcetti’s Chief of Staff, a panel discussion hosted by Emmy Award winning journalist Elizabeth Espinosa, and a dynamic set of workshops focused on personal finance, investing and entrepreneurship. Organizers anticipate 200 women and elected officials will convene for the event.

"Our city only succeeds if everyone has an equal shot at success, and I want Los Angeles to lead in empowering all our residents," said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. "Events like the Latina Financial Summit & Bootcamp help Latina Angelenos acquire the knowledge and tools they need to build a more prosperous life, benefiting both their families and our city."

"Research shows that White households have 18 times more wealth than Latino families and this disparity effects every other opportunity in life, including education, health, and well being” says Ramona  Ortega, CEO and Founder of Mi Dinero Mi Futuro, an on-line financial services platform targeting Latino Millennials. “Latinos have a Trillion dollars in buying power but only own 2% of the wealth, so the Bootcamp was created to empower Latinas to manage their money with confidence by breaking down the jargon, simplifying the options for investment and engaging in a more comprehensive discussion about building wealth in our communities.”

The Commission on the Status of Women understands the importance of connecting the community with asset-building tools to ensure economic security.  “This Commission is committed to empowering women of Los Angeles in every aspect of their lives and this partnership will ensure that women have access to the resources and information they need to have financial security and economic opportunity” noted Commissioner Ceri Zamora.

“Los Angeles is the epicenter of a Latina power shift that is impacting politics and economics, so it makes perfect sense for Mi Dinero Mi Futuro to launch this innovative multi-city event here in Los Angeles,” said Ortega.  “The growing economic divide in this country will need solutions from every sector and we are clear that we need to make personal finance accessible and relevant, which is why we are going to the community to meet Latinas where they are.”

The bootcamp will provide action oriented workshops on personal finance, retirement, investing, women in tech, and entrepreneurship. The organizers have partnered with a cross sector of organizations and companies to create a phenomenal line up of experts in the field, including a special focus on Latinas in Tech. The partners include the New York Life, L.A. Small Business Resource Centers, Small Business Administration, Women of ALPFA, the Latino Startup Alliance, Sabio.la, and many more.

“We partnered on this Summit because New York Life is dedicated to providing financial education and ensuring that the Latino community has the resources it needs to make the best decisions.” Says Berta Montoya Sr. Community Relations Associate with New York Life.

The Latina Financial Summit & Bootcamp is organized by Mi Dinero Mi Futuro and the Los Angeles Commission on the Status of Women.
