Lean Enterprise Institute Introduces 3 New Workshops for Building a Lean Enterprise

Companies that want to emerge stronger from the recession will benefit from a series of January workshops by the Lean Enterprise Institute that will help them extend the waste-elimination benefits of lean thinking from production to other functions.

Lean manufacturing, or more precisely, lean management began on the shop floor but a growing number of companies are realizing that its ability to cut costs and lead times while improving productivity and quality has application throughout the business. These companies understand that expanding their lean transformations now will help them emerge stronger from the recession.

"Strategically, this is not the time to hunker down, simply cut costs, and wait out the storm," said John Shook, senior advisor to the nonprofit Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) and author of two landmark books on lean management, Learning to See and Managing to Learn.

Extending Lean Thinking
To show companies how to extend lean thinking beyond manufacturing to critical areas such as human resources, information technology, product development, and the supply chain, LEI will run a series of 11 workshops, Jan. 12-14, 2010, in San Diego, CA, to help managers understand what it takes to transition to a complete lean enterprise and acquire the skills to support the transition.

What is Lean?
The terms lean manufacturing, lean production, or lean management refer to a complete business system for organizing and managing product development, operations, suppliers, customer relations, and the overall enterprise that requires less capital, material, space, time, or human effort to produce products and services with fewer defects to precise customer desires, compared with traditional modern management.

Lean Enterprise Institute
Lean Enterprise Institute, Inc., was founded in 1997 by management expert James P. Womack, Ph.D., as a nonprofit research, education, publishing, and conference company with a mission to advance lean thinking around the world. We teach courses, hold management seminars, write and publish books and workbooks, and organize public and private conferences. We use the surplus revenues from these activities to conduct research projects and support other lean initiatives such as the Lean Education Academic Network, the Lean Global Network and the Healthcare Value Leaders Network.
