The transit center is touted to be the "Grand Central of the West" and one of the San Francisco's largest construction projects. It is expected to open in 2017.
The transit center, designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli, will serve as a cutting edge multi-modal transporation hub for the Bay Area's eleven public transit systems-including the future California high speed rail-and feature several green elements including natural light, energy efficiency components and an urban park.
Located near Mission and First Streets in the heart of downtown San Francisco, the project will be built on the former site of the Embarcadero Freeway on-ramps, which were destroyed in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The transit center is part of a $4 billion urban revitalization project, which also includes an extension to the Caltrain rail system and Transbay Tower.
