Lecture on "The Magic of Danny Lane"

Mr. Danny Lane said, any budding professional should know three things well - the subject, tools and themselves, after that, it is imperative the task will be done.

Mr. Danny Lane, a Acclaimed Glass Artist and global reputed sculptor delivered a talk about his work and creative philosophies at Sushant School of Art and Architecture, Gurgaon. He shared his experiences with the students, the faculty and staff of this institute and the Sushant School of Design. The lecture was organized as part of the Platform Lecture Series 2011 jointly by the Ansal Institute of Technology, the Sushant School of Art and Architecture and the Sushant School of Design on 1st April, 2011.

He said that any budding professional should know three things well - the subject, tools and themselves, after that, it is imperative the task will be done. While praising the students, he said, "they have an ignition of passion which motivates them to achieve what they aspire". He explores line in two and three dimensions to reach the limits of the possible in glass, steel, wood and light.

The massive solidity of Lane's pieces on show in Sculpture in the Close seems to have been achieved as much in defiance of the properties of glass as in fulfillment of them. He said that glass is an inherently unstable, brittle substance, associated more frequently with delicacy and fragility than with the flexibility and load-bearing capacity that he obliges it to maintain. Its unevenly broken edges and stratifications in his work refract the light that often makes a vacancy of glass in public, transferring into visual form the instability that the physical tension of his sculptures keeps triumphantly at bay.

Danny's sculptures exploit the strength of glass under compression and combine feats of design and engineering to produce work, breathtaking in its apparent simplicity. He uses the refractive and reflective qualities to challenge expectations. On a large or small scale, Lane's works redefine architectural space. Lane's work combines a monumental, and at times brutal, physicality, stacked and fractured glass, twisted or rusted steel, with his strong belief in the metaphysical and transcendental qualities of art.
