STEM Awareness Day: Inspiring a generation of youth to become leaders, innovators, and forward thinkers of tomorrow (LIFTT)
LIFTT-NSBE Jr., a chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, today announced its first annual STEM Awareness Day event with a focus on motivating K-12 students to consider careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Elementary, middle, and high school students (along with their parents and other concerned community-stakeholders) will convene at Mills College on Saturday, February 19, 2011 for a spectacular event that will celebrate excellence in education and raise awareness on the importance of STEM education and its impact on the global economy.
This event will draw students from public schools, private schools, charter schools, and homeschooling systems across the San Francisco Bay Area. Engineers, doctors, educators, and business professionals will offer their support as speakers, chaperones, and instructors. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the contributions of Blacks to STEM fields, participate in hands-on activities, and explore science and engineering principles in relation to real-life experiences.
LIFTT-NSBE Jr., aka Leaders, Innovators, and Forward Thinkers of Tomorrow, began its youth chapter in Oakland, CA in 2010 with the goal of fulfilling the mission of the National Society of Black Engineers which is to increase the number of culturally-responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. Sponsored by Inward Journeys Consulting, the LIFTT-NSBE Jr. Chapter is run by youth officers under the guidance of its chapter advisors, Dr. Chris Harrison and Dr. NNeka Harrison.
LIFTT-NSBE Jr. Chapter offers STEM Awareness Day at a time when President Barack Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan has issued a clarion call for prioritizing educational and community initiatives that prepare our nation's youth to become global leaders, innovators, and forward thinkers of tomorrow in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
