Limiting Eating Times May Override Ills Linked to High-Fat Diet, Study Finds
Online, July 16, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies recently found that limiting regular eating times and extending the daily fasting period may override the adverse health effects of a high-fat diet and prevent obesity, diabetes and liver disease in mice. They reported that mice that were limited to eating only during an eight-hour period daily were healthier than mice that were allowed to eat freely throughout the day. This was the case regardless of the quality or content of their diet.
"It's a dogma that a high-fat diet leads to obesity and that we should eat frequently when we are awake," says Satchidananda Panda, an associate professor in the Regulatory Biology Laboratory and senior author of the paper. "Our findings, however, suggest that regular eating times and fasting for a significant number of hours a day might be beneficial to our health."
"It's been assumed that the cause of obesity is nutritional; too much of the wrong things or just too much food," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). "However, this study suggests that spreading caloric intake through the day may cause the problem by upsetting metabolic pathways that are governed by the circadian clock and nutrient sensors."
"We advise eating very lightly during the day and using extended periods without food to accelerate the rate at which the body uses fat stores," add the Griesels. "When given the proper nutrients and support, our bodies tend to move toward ideal body composition and optimal health naturally."
