Literary Skin Care: Redefining Intelligent Beauty

Independent beauty startup SABBATICAL BEAUTY launches literary-themed, socially conscious spring line, BREATHE

Sabbatical Beauty, an independent beauty online startup, will be launching its ten piece Spring collection “BREATHE” on March 22, 2015. With its infusion of Asian-based natural ingredients, Sabbatical Beauty capitalizes on the current trend towards Korean beauty in mainstream beauty outlets such as Sephora and Into the Gloss, but with emphasis on small-batch and ethically-created products that appeal to mindful consumers.

Literary fiction and academia are the themes of the two gift sets offered in BREATHE:

"These two gift sets emphasize the literary flavor and feel of the company (the founder is a literature professor), supporting independent women who can neglect their own self-care rituals when they need it most. "

Adeline Koh, Founder and CEO, Sabbatical Beauty

1) a “Book of the Quarter” set which will include academic Patricia Leavy’s novel “Low Fat Love,” samples of EDEN (a facial mist with coconut, rose and chinese peony), a CAMEL MILK AND YEAST facial mask, a MOAR HONEY II serum (with 48% propolis and royal jelly extract) and earl grey lip balm, along with single servings of Green Tea and Bedtime Tea. Low Fat Love is part of the arts-based research movement, involving full length fiction books informed by social research but written in a literary/artistic form. Leavy is an independent sociologist and editor of multiple book series. Sabbatical Beauty will also host an online discussion of the book with the author towards the end of Spring season.

2) an “Academic Conference” travel gift set for pampering the weary traveler that includes BREATHE items such as BRIGHT EYES, a under-eye circle cream and DEW, a special lavender-scented bubble bath with glitter.

These two gift sets emphasize the literary flavor and feel of the company (the founder is a literature professor), supporting independent women who can neglect their own self-care rituals when they need it most.

Sabbatical Beauty has a tradition of literary and popular-culture themed references in its products, such as the Dorian Gray Anti-Aging Serum, a tribute to Oscar Wilde’s short novel, and Winter is Coming, a facial oil balm to counteract extremely dry winter skin, whose name is a reference to Game of Thrones. The company is excited to introduce this new line to literary-minded women who need some extra pampering at the start of a new season.

About Sabbatical Beauty

Sabbatical Beauty is an independent beauty startup founded by Adeline Koh, Ph.D., associate professor of literature at Stockton University. Koh created Sabbatical Beauty while on sabbatical because she was frustrated with the beauty products on the market. Many generic products loudly proclaim their "active" ingredients on their packaging, but these actives only make up a tiny percentage of ingredients. Inspired by the DIY beauty scene, she decided to start making her own skincare, and shared her results with friends. Sabbatical Beauty's goal is to share with its users the experience of being on sabbatical: happy, relaxed and refreshed. At the core of the small company’s philosophy is to create ethically handcrafted skincare that supports the well-being and joie de vivre of its users.

Sabbatical Beauty was featured in January 2015 in Slate in a highly shared article that remained on the newspaper’s top ten article lists for a week.
