Living a Greener Lifestyle Could Green the Wallet and Increase Happiness, Says FEBC

Happy Travelings

The greenest cities in America all tied for No. 1 in different surveys and reports because the polls used different factors for winning the top spot. Case in point: Honolulu, Portland and San Francisco were each voted most environmentally conscious cities in the last few years for energy-efficient buildings, wide access to public transportation or air quality. Not everyone can live in the greenest city, but individuals can do their part to benefit the environment wherever they are. Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC), a membership benefits company offering health and financial wellness benefits, encourages members to find an environmental issue that matters to them and try to learn more.

“Most of us have busy lives and it may seem impossible to do something good for the environment. Maybe the issue needs to be re-framed: some methods of eco-friendly living could also have direct and immediate benefits to the person doing them,” said Jennifer Martinez, manager at FEBC. “Some actions can help them save money and also help the environment. For example, grocery discounts available to FEBC members could help consumers buy compostable paper products or more organic food at better prices.”

What are other budget-friendly actions the average person can take? The blog sheknows talks about how saying “no” doesn’t cost anything and it helps prevent unnecessary waste. People could refuse freebies like pens and paper products or use reusable bags instead of plastic bags at the local market. If a person lives in an area where walking, bicycling and public transportation are easily accessible, they could consider cutting down on driving. The benefits include improved health and fitness if they walk or cycle. Rush hour traffic generally causes stress for people, including increasing the risks of depression and anxiety. Studies show that taking a bus or train boosts productivity and positive feelings in commuters.

If public transportation isn’t a viable option, people interested in energy- and cost-saving ways to get to work could also try carpooling. While ride-sharing has been declining for decades, it could save billions of dollars for drivers who stop driving. For example, a study showed that if 19 million commuters switched to carpooling, it would directly save them $15.8 billion annually and save society $13 billion annually in costs associated with congestion and road maintenance costs. Not to mention the benefits to the environment: carbon dioxide emissions would reduce by 9.1 million metric tons a year and provide $338 million in savings.

FEBC offers a variety of benefits that can help environmentally conscious people in their pursuit for health and being more planet-friendly. From access to certified medical professionals to fitness and grocery discounts, members may find the support they need to establish a greener lifestyle.

“Many people don’t realize how easy it is to incorporate sustainable practices into our daily lives. We understand everyone can’t just sell their car and walk 15 miles to work every day,” added Martinez. “We recommend commuters look into ways they can reduce their impact. They may find those actions help them save money and it improves their overall well-being.”
