Local Cancer Research Group Recognizes National Cancer Research Month

May is National Cancer Research Month. This month is greatly supported by Arkansas cancer center, Highlands Oncology Group.

Highlands Oncology Group (HOG) is Northwest Arkansas' leading cancer treatment facility and as such is deeply committed to cancer research and providing the best possible care.

May is National Cancer Research Month, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), and HOG vigorously supports recognizing the month.

Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States, according to the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). Cancer is exceeded only by heart disease, and accounts for nearly one of every four deaths.

In the United States, men have approximately a one-in-two lifetime risk of developing cancer and women have a one-in-three risk.

In 2014, about 585,720 Americans are expected to die of cancer, according to the ACS. Almost 1,600 people per day.

However, through cancer research there have been significant advances to cancer care.

Among adults, the five-year survival rate for all cancers combined is approximately 68 percent, according to the AACR. The rate is an increase of 19 percent since 1975. The five-year survival rate for all childhood cancers combined is approximately 83 percent, an increase of 30 percent since 1975, according to the AACR.

Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved eight innovative cancer drugs including two drugs that were granted breakthrough therapy designation, according to the AACR.
