Local Dermatologist Selected To Compete In The 2010 Ford World Ironman Championship, Teams Up With Skin Cancer Foundation To Raise Awareness About Skin Cancer Prevention.

Dr. Robert Nossa is a board certified dermatologist that is avid with fitness. Due to the number of athletes that fail to use appropriate skin protection, Dr. Nossa is teaming up with Foundation to raise awareness.

Verona, New Jersey- - This year Robert Nossa MD, was selected to compete in the 2010 Ford World Ironman Championship in Kona, Hawaii. This race is one of the biggest challenges the sports world has to offer with 2,000 athletes from around the world competing in a 140.6 mile triathlon. Athletes will have to endure 2.4 miles of swimming through tough ocean waves, 112 miles of biking, and a 26.2 mile marathon run through challenging wind and sun scorched, lava-covered terrain.

Dr. Nossa lives in Montclair NJ, and is a Board Certified Dermatologist practicing with The Dermatology Group, PC. Dr. Nossa is taking this unique opportunity to partner with the Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF) to raise money to support the Foundation's community awareness about skin cancer prevention. Dr. Nossa says that, "It is an amazing opportunity to partner with the Skin Cancer Foundation and The Ironman Foundation. It is not uncommon for athletes to come into the office that are in excellent physical shape, but that have overlooked the health of their skin. It is through this amazing event that I hope to send the message that skin cancer prevention is as important as the exercise regimen."

The Skin Cancer Foundation has set the standard for educating the public and the medical profession about skin cancer, and the need for early detection and effective treatment. Their mission is to decrease the incidence of the disease by means of public and professional education, medical training, and research.
The Foundation's programs include: The Road to Healthy Skin Tour which has screened over 6,500 people nationwide, since 2008, as well as The Sunsational Guide to Sun Smart Safety: Fun in the Sun 101 which educates children ages 11 - 14 about the science of sun safety. In addition to screening and education programs, the Foundation offers research grants for residents and dermatologists and is also involved in advocacy. Recently the SCF attended the FDA hearings in Washington, DC to reclassify tanning beds as carcinogens and the Foundation is currently advocating for $5M to be allocated to skin cancer research.
