Los Angeles Art Community Showers Paralyzed US Marine With Love

Webisode, Behind the Scene with Britt Hysen, captures the spirit of Angeleno camaraderie as artists and friends gather to help a former serviceman.

Burbank, CA- Hope and love filled Mission Control Studios in Culver City, CA when the art community came together for Piscean Reborn: Mission X, a fundraiser for Xavier Cross, a US Marine who was paralyzed from the waist down as a result of a near fatal car accident in Las Vegas, NV in 1999. Michelle LaVon, performance artist and sister to Xavier, organized the event with Mission Control partners, Derek Milner and Andre Freimann, to raise a portion of the $30k necessary for an experimental stem cell operation that could reverse the serviceman's paralysis.

Behind the Scene with Britt Hysen: Mission X features the DJs, musicians, aerial artists, fire dancers, and live painters that were among the night's entertainment set in a vintage plane hanger once owned by eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes. The Space Wench, a thirty-eight foot long pirate ship on wheels provided a two story art installation that delighted the inner child of the crowd while providing an elevated lounge for some. "I'm proud to be offering up our space for this event," Freimann said, "and to help him [Xavier] find his legs again."

It was an international crowd of nearly three hundred, with representatives from Canada, Germany, Denmark, and Mexico in the mix who donated a minimum of twenty dollars per person with one hundred percent of the proceeds going to the Xavier Cross Fund. "There is a huge community of compassion in Los Angeles," web series host/producer Britt Hysen observed, "and it's inspiring to see people so willing to support a good cause." From geneticists to actors, all were happy to contribute, and were quick to offer their high opinions of the remarkable Marine. "He's always been an inspiration to me." LaVon said of her brother. "I've always been an optimistic person, but he's always had a sort of grounding sense." Mission Control's Milner agreed, "I've never heard him complain. He just bares it, and always has a smile on his face. And he's a hard worker, too." Jordan O'Neill, a Los Angeles talent manager and event promoter added, "It's his strength, both mentally and physically [that's most admirable]."

While the night was a success, having raised one sixth of the needed money, more fundraising is necessary to reach the targeted goal of 30k.
