Lt. Colonel Kevin Sweeney Receives Honor From General Charles Horner

Which is better: winning an Oscar, a Grammy, the Super Bowl or being awarded as the best Pilot of Desert Storm? Top Commander of Allied Forces during the Gulf War, General Charles Horner, recently honors airmanship of Lt. Colonel Kevin Sweeney.

A lot of great actors, actresses, musicians, and athletes receive awards, but being awarded as the best pilot of Desert Storm is life changing. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the eventful date, General Charles Horner, the Top Commander of all Allied Air Forces during the Gulf War, recently said, "I consider that the finest piece of airmanship to have occurred during the entire Gulf War." What in life is more inspiring than saving the lives of fellow airmen? That is exactly what Lt. Colonel Kevin Sweeney did and for that heroic feat he was awarded the United States Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross. This legendary Medal is awarded for "heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight."

The entire world experienced the well-publicized flight of Captain 'Sully' Sullenberger due to television cameras when he saved the lives of his passengers by expertly landing his crippled US Air jet in the Hudson River. Lt. Colonel Sweeney's heroic flight was not publicized because it was a war time combat mission; however Lt. Colonel Sweeney's flight has been referred to as the military equivalent of the outstanding airmanship Captain Sullenberger displayed.

General Horner was referring to the historic flight when Lt. Colonel Sweeney had both the engines on his left wing on fire and then both engines came completely off the wing of his KC-135 4-engine Air Refueling jet during a Desert Storm combat mission all the while loaded with 31,000 gallons of jet fuel. Through the Lt. Colonel's miraculous airmanship he was able to successfully recover and land the mortally wounded jet at an airbase over 1 hour and 15 minutes away during the darkness of night!
