Lung Cancer in Women reaching Epidemic proportions

Lung Cancer, which is both the #1 preventable form of cancer & also the #1 killer of Americans (under 85 years), has been increasing significantly in women. Female lung cancer is relatively unheard of in the media, & research is itself underfunded.

Cancer is now the #1 killer of American adults (under age 85 years), & Lung Cancer is the most common form of cancer. Worse yet, lung cancer in women has been increasing at an alarming epidemic rate: between 1930-1997 lung cancer deaths in women rose a staggering 600%, and between 1990-2003 cases of lung cancer in American women increased by 60%, while rates for men showed little change overall. (See Figure 1.)

The American Cancer Society has estimated that more than 270,100 American women died from lung cancer in 2007 - more than all the deaths from breast, ovarian, and uterine cancers combined. Between the years of 1965-1985, lung cancer in American women increased dramatically to become greater than any other form of cancer. Levels of cancer in African Americans are also greater than in White Americans. For more information on Lung Cancer, visit www.cancer.org/

Under-funded research may be the reason why we hear so little about this in the media. While improved response rates are being experienced by some therapy treatments, it is better to never have a need for cancer treatment "prevention is better than cure," as always. But how are women smokers, or their partners (i.e., second-hand smoke risks, to which children are especially vulnerable) to quit smoking, in attempt to avoid this preventable form of cancer?
