Maestro James Conlon Conducts Annual AYS Gala Concert, April 1 at Royce Hall

Los Angeles, California, March 2, 2016 (Newswire.com) - On Friday April 1 at 7:30pm at UCLA’s majestic Royce Hall, audiences will be treated to a free concert led by LA Opera Music Director and world-renowned conductor James Conlon. For this special evening, Maestro Conlon has selected Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1, and Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra, pieces sure to demonstrate the range, precision and artistry of the extraordinary young professionals of the American Youth Symphony. James Conlon, one of today’s most versatile and respected conductors, has cultivated a vast symphonic, operatic and choral repertoire. Since his 1974 debut with the New York Philharmonic, he has conducted virtually every major American and European symphony orchestra. Through worldwide touring, an extensive discography and videography, numerous essays and commentaries, frequent television appearances and guest speaking engagements, Mr. Conlon is one of classical music’s most recognized interpreters.

This concert, sponsored by the Flora L. Thornton Foundation, is presented in loving memory of John Liebes, who served on the AYS Board of Directors from 1997 until his death in August 2015.

The concert will be followed by an 8:30 pm Gala Dinner, honoring Maestro Conlon, Philanthropist Marilyn Ziering, and Composer Walter Arlen.

The American Youth Symphony, now in its 51st season, has been heralded by KUSC’s Jim Svejda as “The finest youth symphony on earth!” The mission of AYS is to inspire the future of a timeless art form.
