Major Oil Pipework Fabricator To Use Advanced Welding On $84M Offshore Hookup

A major oil pipeline fabricator in Norway will soon be using state-of-the-art equipment as it begins work on the $84 M offshore hook-up at the Valhall field in the southern North Sea.

Valhall, which has pumped oil since the 1980s and is located in 70 meters of water, has produced around 31,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd)in 2011.

The production platform is 65 meters high and weighs 21,000 tons, and is one of five platforms in a complex serving the oilfield.

Valhall's oil production is piped to the offshore Ekofisk Center and then on to Teeside, England. Natural gas from the platform is transported by pipeline to Emden, Germany.

A range of weld purge systems designed and manufactured by Huntingdon Fusion Techniques Ltd (HFT) in the UK have been supplied to accommodate pipe sizes from 50 to 1000 mm.

These represent the most advanced ancillary equipment available anywhere at the present time. The Argweld® Quick Purge™ Pipe Weld Purging Systems will be used during the fabrication of titanium alloy and duplex stainless steel pipes.

Producing welded joints of the highest integrity for this application requires that inert gas protection of the weld root be provided to prevent oxidation. Argon is fed into inflatable seals on both sides of the joint to provide a reliable and rapid inert gas coverage.

HFT is also able to supply its latest groundbreaking gas instruments to monitor oxygen levels in the purge gas and the PurgeEye™ equipment can measure levels as low as 10 ppm (0.001%).

The Argweld® Range of Inflatable Pipe Weld Purging Systems were first designed and developed by Huntingdon Fusion Techniques in 1975.

Founders of Huntingdon Fusion Techniques, PhD qualified specialists in welding metallurgy and gas physics have more than 50 years experience in their respective fields.

They are proud to have shaped the Company of 35 years to become the acknowledged World Leaders in gas weld purging techniques.

From their early beginnings with the development of the World's first Weld Purge Monitor™, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques has maintained its position at the forefront of technology by developing and evolving new products to maintain pace with advancing technology and market demands.
