'ManDown App' Is a Life-Saving Personal Safety App Developed by Professional NYC Firefighters

Equipped with a GPS locator, automatic alerts, and "SOS" alarms, ManDown is designed to keep everyone, from firefighters to the elderly, safe and sound

A team of New York City Firefighters are continuing their life-saving mission outside of the station with their recent development of the ManDown App. This personal safety app sends automatic emergency alerts - via text, email, and voice - to notify contacts that the user needs help in case of accident, injury, or emergency. It also provides emergency contacts with the exact GPS location of the user.

The ManDown App is named for the emergency situation where there is a “man down”, and a firefighter is missing, trapped, or injured inside a burning building. “Between us, we have over 100 years of experience in the busiest Fire Department in the world,” said co-founder Tom Woska. “Through this experience, we saw a need for an app like this. Not only is this app great for First Responders, [but] it is also helpful for the elderly, kids, and anyone working or going out alone.”

Once the ManDown App is activated, it continuously monitors the phone’s movement. The default setting is that if the phone remains motionless for 30 seconds, then a pre-Alarm warning will start. If the phone is not moved within another 30 seconds, then the Full Alarm mode is activated. In the Full Alarm mode, the phone sends out a local, audible alarm, which is helpful to attract attention to the person needing help. The phone will also send out a text, email, and phone call to selected recipients. This message will contain the GPS location of the person in distress, allowing the emergency contact to quickly and easily get them help. Additionally, if the user is in immediate need of attention (for example in a dangerous situation or as a medical alert), they simply hit the “SOS” button to send out an automatic alert, unrelated to lack of mobility.

The motionless timer can be set, in hourly increments, for up to 24 hours. This feature enables the ManDown app to adjust to a user’s unique needs, and allows it be used as a Safety Net device. Users who would benefit from this app’s unique offerings include emergency workers, lone workers (i.e. utility workers, postal workers, overnight workers), the elderly, people with medical conditions, college students, children, baby-sitters, solo hikers, and more.

The ManDown App provides a low cost option for users to keep themselves safe and give their family and friends the peace of mind knowing they are being watched over by something as simple as an app. Says the team, “The ultimate goal of the ManDown App is just like our goal as firefighters: to enhance personal safety and save lives.”

The ManDown App is available for just $2.99 at the iPhone App Store and Android Market. More details are available at http://www.mandownapp.com.
