China’s fascination with the “king of fruits” has become so huge that Malaysian durian plantations have begun to limit visitors to curb the influx of tourists from China.
Chinese customs have revealed that over 250 tonnes of durians are imported annually, with the Ministry of Commerce estimating that Malaysia’s durian economy will triple within the next few years. China’s increasing taste for Malaysia’s durians has raised prices and motivated a series of new and unique durian-based products to cater to wealthy Chinese consumers.

Chinese consumers are extremely open to durian-based products with its use as a flavouring increasing from 0.82% in June 2014 to become 1.34% in the following year.
In the first-ever Malaysia Durian Festival held in November 2017 in Nanning, China, Malaysian ministers used the festival to promote Malaysian durians and managed to attract 165,000 people. TFP Inc., among other durian exporters, shipped 5000 kilograms of durians for the festival.
There have been discussions for the festival to be held in various other cities in China as well, such as Hanjiao, Xiamen, Guangzhou and Beijing.
Mao Shan Café attains their durians direct from Malaysian durian plantations owned by TFP Inc., which boasts a world-class supply chain infrastructure utilizing blockchain technology, bringing the freshest durians from the farmers to the consumers.
The Mao Shan Café franchise expects to open their 100th store in China by 2020, and its 200th store by 2022, aiming to be listed on the main board of the China Exchange during that time.
