Litigation is down, but transactional work is up. Right now, there is robust transactional work being done in international trade and public infrastructure.

Born in Tucson, Arizona, Mr. Ronquillo had a strong sense of duty instilled in him at a young age. He recalls:

"I'm Mexican-American, from the south side of Tucson, part of the first generation in my family to go to college and the first to go to law school. My parents always put a high premium on education and doing right by others. The first law firm I joined when I went into private practice also catalyzed my passion for social justice and helping others."

After earning his Juris Doctor from George Washington University School of Law in 1979, Mr. Ronquillo quickly established himself as a skilled attorney and valued member of his community. He began his career working for the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights before going into private practice in 1983. By 1986, Mr. Ronquillo had already served as president of both the Dallas Mexican Bar Association and the Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

In the years since Mr. Ronquillo has served in numerous other leadership positions in prominent legal and community organizations and has been widely recognized for his contributions and influence. Notably, he was involved in two initiatives in the 1990s while chairing the State Bar of Texas Committee on Immigration and Nationality Law in which he helped the Texas Bar to provide representation to over 4,000 refugees seeking political asylum. This work earned him the Bar President’s Special Citation Award as well as the Texas Mexican Bar Association’s Outstanding Lawyer of the Year Award.

Today, Mr. Ronquillo is widely regarded as a preeminent practitioner in fields such as international law and minority-owned business enterprises to government affairs and public policy. In particular, he is well versed in municipal bonds and financing and has served as bond counsel to many public entities. Additionally, he authored an influential white paper on public-private partnerships in Texas.

Among many other honors, Mr. Ronquillo was recognized in 2011 by Hispanic Business Magazine as one of the “100 Most Influential Hispanics” in the United States, and by Latino Leaders Magazine with its prestigious “Maestro Award for Leadership.” In 2016, he was selected by the National Association of Distinguished Counsel as the “Nation’s Top One Percent.” Most recently, he was named as one of the most powerful business leaders in the Dallas-Fort Worth area by D CEO in their annual special edition of the Dallas 500.

As a leader in his field, Mr. Ronquillo maintains a unique vantage point on prevailing trends in his many areas of practice. In particular, he notes that he has seen a significant shift away from litigation toward alternative dispute resolution:

"Litigation is down, but transactional work is up. Right now, there is robust transactional work being done in international trade and public infrastructure. Both federal and state courts now require that you need to go to mediation before you go to trial. There is a lot of alternative dispute resolution, such as arbitration and mediation—everything and anything you can do to stay out of the courthouse. This is a major change from how things worked when I started practicing law in 1979."

With nearly four decades of successful practice behind him, Mr. Ronquillo is able to take these and other changes in stride. Looking to the future, he intends to continue helping his clients find creative solutions to their legal problems. “First and foremost,” Mr. Ronquillo said, “I consider myself a problem solver.”
