Why is jatropha the new super fuel?
Jatropha is a drought-resitant inedible green shrub that grows almost anywhere, so not displacing agricultural land for food. The liquid in the plant can be made into a sustainable biodiesel, which back in 2007, was cited by Goldman Sachs as one of the best candidates for future biodiesel production. Since then it has soared.
The oil-rich seeds produce 3 metric tonnes of oil per hectare, the highest of all tree seeds.
Jatropha's potential to help mitigate climate change are vast, reducing 68% of the greenhouse gas emissions of fossil diesel.
The largest economy in southeast Asia, Indonesia has set a budget of $22 billion for alternative fuels promotion.
The climate and land is perfect for jatropha. In fact, a Dutch Professor recently projected more than 25 million hectares in the country is suitable for production of the plant.
