Masterful New Single From Jonathan
United States, February 23, 2015 (Newswire.com) - After a successful debut album Bliss and a regional hit Maggie, Croatian band Jonathan has just released a new maxi single. With Getting Closer Is Keeping Us Apart the band seems to have reached a new maturity – Juvenile is the most honest and lyrically their strongest track to date, while Try To Get Even digs deep into misery and rage without compromising the band's somewhat baffling aptitude for cleverly intertwining uplifting melodies and brittle lyrics. Both of the tracks are miniature archetypal journeys translated into music; self-lacerating quests of such strength as to be more remindful of a metaphysical thriller than a piece of music. The new single will not be included in the next album, due later this year, but stands as a conceptual bridge to a denser, more demanding future material.
Jonathan hit the Croatian scene at the end of 2013, quickly consuming every inch of regional music media. Soon they were to be associated with a single word – 'hype' – a clumsy and easy way of explaining immediate positive response from the audience and music industry. Jonathan is everything but an inflated bubble of instant celebrity. Zoran Badurina, Branko Kovacic, Darko Petkovic, Tomislav Radinovic and Nikica Jurjevic were present on music scene since their teens and gained their credentials playing in the most subversive alternative bands in Croatia. With experience and wisdom, Jonathan managed to rise from the quagmire of trendy indie bands with, more often than not, nothing to offer but quirkiness and artificial cool to an audience of easily seduced teens. Jonathan is a band with a past – their revolt is born from experience. Musical influences on their sound are diverse, from Nick Cave to Propaghandi, but more on an intrinsic level than deliberately following in another's footsteps. Fortunately, the Croatian Musical Association recognized their worth and nominated them as the best new act of 2014.
Jonathan is also praised for their exceptional prowess at live performances, including a gig at Vienna Waves Festival and supporting The Editors in Zagreb, so it should not come as much of a surprise that they plan to introduce themselves to international audience on a much larger scale through European and American music festivals. Their festival tour begins with InMusic Festival in Zagreb at the end of July.
