Matthew Thompson Wins UK Young Rally Driver of the Year Award

Matthew Thompson, the UK F1000 Junior Rally Driver from Cheshire, has won the UK Young Rally Driver of the Year award at the Professional Motorsport Expo in Cologne which was held on 15, 16, 17 November.

Matthew joined an illustrious list of names for the awards ceremony; other award winners included the Citroen World Rally Team and Red Bull F1 Team for their successes in 2011.

Matthew said "To win the UK Young Rally Driver of the Year award is the perfect ending to what has been an incredible year for me. This year was my final year in the Kick Energy Pirelli Junior 1000 Rally Championship, in which I clinched second overall. To win the award is fantastic and I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has helped and put faith in me, not just this year, but in the three years I've competed in Junior 1000. The award will definitely put me in good stead for a fresh challenge in 2012."

Matthew Thompson made British Rallying history as the youngest ever driver on a British Rally, when he started the Roskirk Junior Stages of the inaugural UK Formula 1000 Junior Rallying Championship. It was Sunday 8th March 2009 and Matthew was 14 years and 12 days old.

Currently Matthew is planning to graduate to the BTRDA Rally First championship in 2012 an opportunity to sample some of the best gravel rallying in the UK; to enable this Matthew is currently looking for sponsors for the 2012.

Immediately upon his return from the World Motorsport Expo, Matthew will be helping raise money for Children in Need on 18th November, more details at Graham Raeburn's Just Giving Page called KDMC Rally Car Pull 2011.
