Maxwell IT Helps Community Clinic on Unalaska Island Implement eICU Program
Seattle, Wash. , November 7, 2016 (Newswire.com) - Maxwell IT—the Pacific Northwest’s leading IT services company—is proud to announce that it has assisted the Iliuliuk Family and Health Services clinic on Unalaska Island —located in the Aleutian Island chain off the coast of Alaska—to establish a state-of-the-art virtual intensive care unit (eICU). The advanced telemedicine solution deployed by the Maxwell IT team will provide the clinic’s providers with a direct data connection to major medical centers in Anchorage and Providence, allowing the ICU staff at these facilities to remotely monitor patients and work with Unalaska clinic staff in real-time from more than 800 miles away.
With a population of just over 2,000 people, Unalaska is an unlikely location for a state-of-the-art virtual intensive care unit. However, Unalaska is also home to Dutch Harbor—a busy port used by fishermen and crabbers who work in some of the most dangerous conditions on earth. Because of this, the Iliuliuk Family and Health Services clinic frequently treats patients with severe trauma or critical injuries. These patients are often flown via medivac to the mainland, but the weather in that area is not always condusive to helicopters.
The clinic now has multiple HD-quality Skype connections, real-time data monitoring of digital medical equipment, and other technologies that allow them to collaborate 24/7 with specialists on the mainland.

According to Tracy Maxwell, President at Maxwell IT, “The medical professionals at the Iliuliuk clinic are hard-working nurses and general practitioners who were often faced with scenarios outside of their area of experience. The eICU technology we installed provides them with on-demand access to expertise and extra resources, equipping them to make better medical decisions and save lives.”
To complete the nearly $100,000 eICU deployment, Maxwell technicians completely overhauled the Iliuliuk Family and Health Services clinic’s IT infrastructure. “The bandwidth and networking equipment required to make this eICU a reality is quite extensive, and would have been impossible for a location like Unalaska until very recently.” said Maxwell. “The clinic now has multiple HD-quality Skype connections, real-time data monitoring of digital medical equipment, and other technologies that allow them to collaborate 24/7 with specialists on the mainland.”
The eICU officially opened in September and has already treated several patients. Because patients can be assessed and monitored remotely by trained ICU doctors and specialists, the local practitioners have been able to provide better on-site care. This has reduced the number of helicopter medivac flights, while saving money and, more importantly, saving lives.
