MENTOR Celebrates 23rd Annual National Mentoring Month in January 2025

President Biden officially declares January "National Mentoring Month."

Launched in 2002 by MENTOR, the leading nonprofit helping to create high-quality relationship-centered practices for young people, National Mentoring Month celebrates the positive role mentors have played in the lives of young people and promotes the role of mentorship in helping to create more equitable schools, communities, and workplaces.

Alongside notable national and local partners like the National Urban League, Concerned Black Men of America Inc., members of Congress, and MENTOR's 25 Affiliates, MENTOR recognizes January as National Mentoring Month. The White House released an official proclamation from President Joseph R. Biden, to begin the new year. "I encourage every American - whether you are a college student, community leader, or person hoping to make a difference - to explore opportunities to mentor," said President Biden in the proclamation.

"National Mentoring Month is a time to set course for the personal impact we want to make in the days and months ahead. We hope that neighbors, friends, caregivers and those who simply care will choose to share their time and wisdom with young people in communities nationwide. This is important because we know that there's no such thing as other people's children. So, let this month be the start of your investment in every child, every young person in real and impactful ways; let it start with being a mentor," said MENTOR CEO Jermaine Myrie.

MENTOR has led a diverse coalition of grassroot advocates including both programs and individuals to maintain and grow federal investment in the youth mentoring grant since its inception - the only mentoring-specific line item in the federal budget.

During National Mentoring Month, MENTOR invites the country to join efforts to ensure that every young person has someone they can look up to, and who provides crucial support and guidance.

National Mentoring Month includes dedicated call to action days for the general public to participate in the month:

  • January 7: I Am A Mentor Day

  • January 14: Thank Your Mentor Day

  • January 17: International Mentoring Day

  • January 20: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

  • January 29-31: National Mentoring Summit, Washington, D.C.

On January 13, people who work in mentoring programs can also look for the release of the fifth edition of the Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring™ which will be made available at eepm.mentoring.org.

To join in on the month's efforts, we invite you to take the National Mentoring Month pledge, share your mentoring story, utilize toolkits ranging on everything for mentoring advocacy to digital engagement and access the National Mentoring Resource Center, which provides free evidence- and research-based mentoring practices.
