MERA, an Eastern Europe's leader in value-added software R&D services, and the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of N.I. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University have successfully accomplished a joint trial project - "IMS Application Development". This partnership is definitely an important step in building up and enhancing local IMS competence in Russia.

IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is the core component of Next Generation Network converged architecture that provides an integrated control layer for many types of access, combining Mobile and Fixed networks. IMS deploys and delivers IP-based services in networks regardless of how and where users connect. IMS was originally designed for 3G Networks by 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) and is now also supported by the TISPAN Technical Committee as a key element of NGN infrastructure.

Examples of IMS-services:
• Presence
• Group List Management
• Multimedia Conference
• Push-To-Talk
• Push-To-Show
• Online Edit Pad
• Enriched calls, including video conferencing and file sharing

MERA actively collaborates with local universities to promote and develop IMS competence in the Nizhny Novgorod region. With this purpose MERA and Nizhny Novgorod State University hold educational courses on IMS and other new technologies for the students of the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty. Within this partnership program, a team of the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty students, working under Prof. Andrey Nuyatov, developed a Client-Server IMS Application. High-level Ericsson Java APIs, realizing JSR 281 and JSR 289 specifications, were used to ensure mobile client-server communication via IMS network. The IMS Application was developed and tested in Ericsson Service Development Studio, which emulates IMS nodes and equipment.

"It is a very interesting and promising project, especially now that IMS is viewed as future of telecom networks. It also represents unique hands-on IMS expertise", - comments the State University professor Andrey Nuyatov, a member of the IMS application development project.

"MERA aims at increasing IMS competence within the company, as well as promoting and developing the IMS-ecosystem nationwide in Russia. Following this strategy MERA launched a non-commercial project in partnership with Nizhny Novgorod State University. MERA's experts lecture at the University, meet with students to discuss interesting IMS projects and provide in-depth telecom and IMS expertise required to build IMS applications. We plan to go ahead with our IMS initiatives and start similar projects with other universities", - says Igor Piruyan, Vice President at MERA Networks.
