Meriden Farmers Market Expands Its Offerings

A farmers market offers a new vision for its community

For the past 13 years, the Meriden Farmers Market has delighted locals with fresh produce and local offerings. Now, the organizers are taking things to a new level; they're creating an experience for those that choose to visit.

"During two of the markets, we're going to have a 5-star chef doing cooking demonstrations with the products sold at the market," explains Michael Rohde, Councilor at Large, who's been involved in helping develop the Meriden Farmer's Market over the years.

The Meriden Farmers Market is planning on having concerts and themed days, welcoming not just farmers but also craftsmen and other vendors. This includes breakfast sandwiches from the Downtown Coffee Shop, as well as fresh juices and sandwiches from the Green Deli & Juice Bar. They've also planned a "back to school" day, as well as a business day, where they've partnered with the Chamber of Commerce to encourage local businesses to attend the event.

"We're very excited that the Midstate Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the Meriden Farmer's Market," says Rosanne Ford, President of the Midstate Chamber of Commerce. "We'll have some fun activities for kids, and we'll have some additional entertainment that day."

The Meriden Farmers Market is unique. Instead of being held in a parking lot or on another paved surface, it's held on the Meriden Green. The spacious location is dotted with trees and flowers, with a stream running through the center.

"This isn't just about buying fruits and vegetables," says Rohde. "This is an experience with live music, and where kids can come walk the trails and look at the ducks on the green with their parents. A lot of people say they love the setting. When they come to the market, they grab some food and sit at a picnic table and enjoy the music."

While the Meriden Farmers Market is a great experience, it also prides itself on being able to offer produce to seniors and families that are eligible for SNAP programs. The Meriden Farmers Market is currently offering $6 coupons for eligible groups this first weekend since many residents have not yet received their vouchers from the state.

"We're offering easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables that are grown locally," says Rohde. He goes on to add, "The produce sold here is on the road for 15 to 20 minutes as opposed to hours when it's trucked from thousands of miles away."

One of the benefits of the market is the fact that it supports local farmers in the area. Over the years, the market has grown and is continuing to expand its horizons with new offerings.

The Meriden Farmers Market will be open every Saturday from July 8 to October 14 from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Make sure to check on their website and their Facebook page for updates on special events occurring at the market.
