Millennial Metal Band, Martyrd, Credits Metallica, Megadeth For Business Model

With the release of Martyrd's second album, The Mortal Coil, Michael Andreas and Aaron Pollard discuss their musical influences, collaborative processes, and the Indie Metal music business with Gen Y Hub Host, Britt Hysen.

In the new age of social media, musicians have the opportunity to share their music with the world through their own self-promotional efforts. Leading the crop of Metal musicians for Generation Y is Thrash Metal band Martyrd, the rising megaband from NYC with a keen sense of the evolving way of the music business. Martyrd's uniquely explosive sound pulls influence from acclaimed Metal gods such as Metallica and Megadeth, and through the combined efforts of the band's manager and the other members of the group, Martyrd finds a platform on the web to share their newest release, The Mortal Coil, with an eager audience. As frontrunners in the Thrash Metal music scene, Martyrd's Guitarist Michael Andreas, 25, Vocalist Aaron Pollard, 26, Guitarist Dan Agapitos, 25, Drummer Adam Birula, 26, and Bassist Brian Nichols, 22 have developed both a distinct thrash-worthy sound and a business mindset to direct them on the path to career longevity and success.

To discuss their take on what it's like to be a Gen Y band and the current business of bands, Britt Hysen of Gen Y Hub spoke with Martyrd's lead guitarist/manager, Mike Andreas, and lead singer/guitarist Aaron Pollard. During a Skype video chat with the band members, Hysen sparked an insightful conversation on what it means to be a business-minded band of the new generation.

When Hysen asked about the often challenging yet potentially rewarding process of self-marketing through social media, Martyrd's Andreas responded, "It all comes down to your creativity. The more creative you can be in reaching your family and friends, the more people are going to be drawn to you - that's why there can be this huge, vibrant underground. You don't need $100,000 of support from Sony records to go out and find a fan base."

Discussing the different avenues social media has offered the musicians of Generation Y in comparison to previous generations, Pollard further elaborated, "The internet is really a fantastic tool, as far as marketing goes. I would assume that back in the day, you'd throw a big ad campaign with flyers and magazine write-ups - but I've gotten into bands just by being on YouTube, clicking on a link. I don't need an advertisement or anything."

As a Generation Y band heavily immersed in the new business of self-marketing via social media, Martyrd's perspective on the current business of bands is telling of how the next generation of musicians can have careers and earn money in different ways than previous generations. Speaking on this, Martyrd's Andreas said, "Historically, bands never really made their money from the sales of their music. They made a ton of money from merchandise sales and touring."

Now, in the era of social media and through the creative efforts of Generation Y, Andreas says that with certain sites, such as Bandcamp, "You can do that yourself." He elaborates that through these types of sites, users are able to choose how they want to support a band they like, monetarily. "Donations can be set to a minimum amount - You can sell the same track for absolutely free and then the next guy could pay $100 for it. That's what's great about donations - if they feel like supporting you, they can." In this new generation of the music business, users are directly given the power to support a band exactly as they are able to and want to.

With shrewd predecessors like Metallica and Megadeth to study, Martyrd is taking control of their career and is ready to move into the Thrash Metal spotlight. Gen Y Hub's Britt Hysen said this about Martyrd, "These guys are incredible musicians," and stresses their commitment to their careers as musicians and their savvy sense of how Generation Y is shaping the music business.
