Minneapolis Area's Skin Rejuvenation Clinic, P.A. Offers New ClearToe® Laser for the Treatment of Nail Fungus

Edina based cosmetic center, Skin Rejuvenation Clinic adds the advanced ClearToe® laser service to its menu of services, the first nail fungus treatment of its kind offered at the clinic.

Skin Rejuvenation Clinic, P.A., a cosmetic clinic in Edina, Minnesota recently expanded its menu of services to include a treatment that can help eradicate toenail and fingernail fungus. ClearToe®, manufactured by the cosmetic laser company, Sciton, Inc. is a groundbreaking technology that tackles nail fungus, a common cosmetic embarrassment. However, nail fungus (onychomychosis) can be painful and can cause permanent damage to nails. It may also lead to other more serious infections.

Until recently the only options for treating toenail fungus ("onychomychosis") were topical solutions or oral medication. They are frequently ineffective and often expensive. In addition, side effects of oral medications can result in liver damage, which can sometimes be severe.

The ClearToe laser treatment works by gently delivering laser energy through the nail targeting where the fungus flourishes. The laser destroys or vaporizes the fungus, leaving behind no damage to the nail or surrounding skin. The treatment is very tolerable and requires no downtime. Patients treated will see results as their infected nail(s) begin to grow. A new, clearer nail begins to replace the damaged nail and results can be seen over the six to twelve months that this nail regeneration process takes.

According to Mark Hagberg, MD, who owns Skin Rejuvenation Clinic with his wife, Elizabeth Brauer Hagberg, MD, ClearToe was just a natural addition to the business's cosmetic offering. "We can treat most cosmetic concerns that patients might have from basic fine lines and wrinkles on the face, to laser-assisted liposuction for the body," he said. "It just seemed fitting that we rounded out our offering so we could truly say 'We have comprehensive cosmetic solutions for you, from head to toe.'"

Patients with mild to moderate nail fungus may see results from one ClearToe treatment while others with more advanced cases of fungus may require more than one service to see improvement. Efficacy studies show that greater than 80% of those treated with laser therapy for their nail fungus considered their results successful.

"Nail fungus can be an embarrassing concern for people," said Dr. Hagberg. "It's rewarding to treat this cosmetic issue not only because so many people are living with the condition for whom we can help, but also because in the past there have been few treatments to effectively treat nail fungus. "

Although results of the treatment are promising, Dr. Hagberg concluded by saying long-term success relies upon the hygiene practices of the patient. "Toenails [and fingernails] can become reinfected so it's imperative that patients throw out old shoes and thoroughly wash socks post treatment to prevent fungi from returning to the nails," he said. To reduce the risk of the fungi returning, Dr. Hagberg explained that it is best that patients replace shoes, socks, bathmats, slippers and any other materials that may harbor the fungus. "It's also prudent to be careful in locker rooms, in public showers, pools, saunas and while getting pedicures, all places where fungus lurks."
