Mirror Images Open-Juvenile Synchronized Skating Team Finishes Fourth At The Annual Colonial Classic Skating Competition

The Mirror Images Open-Juvenile Synchronized Skating team finished fourth and took home the pewter medal at the 27th Annual Colonial Classic Skating Competition in Lowell, Massachusetts this past weekend, January 15-16. This is the third year the team from Fairport, representing the Thomas Creek Figure Skating Club, has attended the event. The competition, sanctioned by US Figure Skating, had over 1800 participants making up 118 teams from thirteen states. It is one of the largest events held in the country for synchronized skating.
The Mirror Images train every Saturday and Sunday at the Thomas Creek Ice Arena in Perinton. The team is made up of 10 members from area schools - Sarah Podvin, Lauren Reed, Melanie Burnett, Kristen Goodrich, Emily Slifkin, Emily Papa, Shayna Rudy, Jessica Wittlin, Nadine Maliakkal and Jamie Packer whom attend Fairport, Penfield, Pittsford and Wayne Central Schools respectively. Jessica Stratton, the team's coach and choreographer, is a Webster resident and has led the team to two Empire State Games Gold medals.
Synchronized skating is one of the fasting growing disciplines in figure skating. Skaters link up and perform elements to music while creating multiple shapes such as blocks, wheels, and circles. The sport allows skaters of all different ages, levels and abilities to participate in local and travel competitions as well as exhibitions. The Mirror Images have two teams that will be traveling to the Eastern Sectional Synchronized Skating Championships held in Lake Placid in early February where they will compete against teams from the east coast. The open-juvenile team will also be traveling to Hershey, PA and Providence, RI later in the season for competitions as part of the Eastern Challenge Series.

The Thomas Creek Figure Skating Club was established in 1989 to promote the enjoyment of figure skating, provide quality practice ice, and to encourage camaraderie among figure skaters in the Fairport, NY area. The club is a member of the United States Figure Skating Association and the Ice Skating Institute.
