Led by chief instructors Bill Scalia and Rob Dell'Aquila, South Jersey's leading mixed martial arts (MMA) gym, Mission MMA, has opened the doors to its new 4,600-square-foot location at 107 Haddon Ave., Westmont NJ, to offer MMA, cardio and conditioning classes to South Jersey.
Joining them will be professional mixed martial arts fighter Waylon Lowe to teach the ever increasingly popular fighting styles of boxing and submission grappling. The styles of Muay Thai Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are run under the supervision of Bill Scalia, while Robert Dell'Aquila oversees the Krav Maga and Strength and Conditioning curriculums.
Mission MMA, which launched in 2010, teaches a highly technical training curriculum and focuses on close, personal attention. Their programs are designed to maximize fitness and conditioning through a full body workout.
Mission MMA also teaches kids classes that focus on movement education by combining exercise and agility drills to improve conditioning and maximize confidence. The age of students range from six to 65. Both Scalia and Dell'Aquila offer private lessons.
The "mission" in Mission MMA is to provide members a progressive curriculum of techniques that will advance them as martial artists with fighting styles from all over the world for competition, self-defense and general health and wellness," says co-owner Bill Scalia, who has more than 25 years of martial arts teaching experience and a degree in physical education. "While our students are enthusiastic, safety and a solid learning experience is our first priority."
"The days of working one muscle at a time and then hitting the treadmill are over," says co-owner Rob Dell'Aquila. "In order to condition your body to perform at its peak, you must perform the type of full body workout that martial arts provides. Looking good is not the goal here, but it is a highly welcomed side effect."
MMA is touted as the fastest growing sport in the United States. (http://www.cagepotato.com/worlds-fastest-growing-sport-fact-or-hype/) It is a full contact combat sport that allows the use of striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground. It combines techniques from a variety of other combat sports. UFC veteran and three-time national wrestling champion Waylon Lowe, has joined Mission MMA to teach weekly classes and offer South Jersey residents a rare opportunity to learn from a world-caliber competitor with years of experience.
