MJB Wood Group, Inc. Receives Chain-of-Custody Certification from Forest Stewardship Council

MJB's new certification means that all products with the FSC seal obtained through MJB are guaranteed traceable all the way back to a responsibly managed source forest.

MJB Wood Group, Inc. has recently been awarded the Chain-of-Custody (COC) Certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an independent nonprofit organization that sets standards for forward-thinking sustainable forestry practices. This certification means that all products with the FSC seal obtained through MJB are guaranteed traceable all the way back to a responsibly managed source forest.

MJB's FSC COC-certified offerings include Pure, Mixed and Recycled dimension lumber, panel products, rough logs and components for the manufacture and distribution, including outsourcing, of FSC Pure, Mixed and Recycled products.

Many vendors can offer FSC products, but unless all links in the wood products supply chain are certified, those products cannot be sold as FSC-certified. In keeping with their lean, comprehensive solutions philosophy, MJB has streamlined this process by obtaining FSC certification for all its domestic manufacturing and distribution facilities, including subcontract partners. MJB also maintains a Chain-of-Custody Certification from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).

The Forestry Stewardship Council considers the diverse interests involved in and affected by the forestry industry, but is itself an independent regulation and certification entity that uses accredited, third-party certifiers to evaluate companies like MJB. A certification from this standards body is a vote of good faith from professionals who know the forestry industry, and who represent all its relevant concerns: economics, environment, culture and material quality.

The FSC logo on MJB's products signifies that those materials were harvested from an FSC-certified forest. FSC-certified forests worldwide must conform to these 10 principles, plus 57 specific criteria that address all aspects of conscientious forestry:

• Compliance with laws and FSC principles
• Tenure and use rights and responsibilities
• Indigenous people's rights
• Community relations and workers' rights
• Benefits from the forest
• Environmental impact
• Management plan
• Monitoring and assessment
• Maintenance of high conservation value forests
• Plantations

This new FSC Chain-of-Custody Certification represents MJB's commitment to using sustainable resources. MJB's Vice President and Chief Information Officer Amy Quaid says, "We at MJB feel strongly about taking a green approach to our business. We are committed to providing products and supply chain solutions that contribute to the conservation, responsible management, and community-level benefits of properly managed forests."

About The Forest Stewardship Council
Formed in 1993, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) was created as an independent nonprofit by a group of loggers, foresters, environmentalists and sociologists. This independent body saw a need for a global conversation on sustainable forestry, and set about identifying cultural and environmental challenges, as well as setting multiple-industry standards for responsible forest management.
