MoBiTec GmbH Introduces First Secretion Vectors For The Lactococcus Lactis Gene Expression System NICE®

The first commercial secretion vectors for the Nisin Controlled gene Expression system NICE®, developed by NIZO food research, are available from MoBiTec. The NICE® system takes advantage of the dairy bacterium Lactococcus lactis as host.

NIZO food research, NL, developed and successfully uses in different projects newly constructed secretion vectors for the Gram-positive gene expression system NICE®. This expression system is making use of the dairy bacterium Lactococcus lactis and its regulation mechanism for the production of the antibiotic peptide nisin, the NIsin Controlled gene Expression system (NICE).

The NICE® system is already used as a dedicated expression system by many scientists in academic, biotech and pharmaceutical institutions and companies all around the world.
Until now plasmid based vectors for the secretion of recombinant proteins into the medium of a Lactococccus lactis culture had to be designed and constructed by the scientists themselves. However, in many cases to no avail due to a lack of knowledge or experience. The new secretion vectors offer a choice of different sequences coding for signal peptides and restriction enzyme cloning sites.

A major advantage of using Lactococcus lactis as production host is its suitability also for the production of food grade proteins. In contrast to other routinely employed bacteria, most notably Escherichia coli, no endotoxins are formed by Lactococcus lactis.

With these new secretion vectors for NICE®, MoBiTec expands its portfolio of non-E. coli based expression vectors and systems and offers the technology to its customer base and academic researchers all around the world. Thus, researchers who wish to use NICE® technology for research purposes are welcome to address their needs to MoBiTec. Customers who wish to use NICE® technology to produce commercial products are invited to direct their requests to NIZO directly in order to obtain a license.

Other non-E. coli expression systems offered by MoBiTec involve e.g. Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus subtilis as expression hosts.
