Moolchand commemorates World Blood Donors Day as an opportunity to thank millions of people for their selfless act who give the precious gift of life through their donation of blood every year. The theme of the 2012 World Blood Donor Day campaign, "Every blood donor is a hero" focuses on the idea that every one of us can become a hero by giving blood.

"Blood is essentially required in accidental cases, major surgeries and treating certain diseases and blood disorders. Donating blood not only helps in saving millions of lives but also improves the health of a blood donor. Ideally, donating blood four times a year stimulates the generation of red blood cells. In patients prone to iron overload (due to hemochromatosis), blood donation prevents the accumulation of iron." says Dr Arvind Khanijo, Senior Consultant, Blood Bank, Moolchand Medcity, New Delhi.

Voluntary, Non-Remunerated Blood Donors are the lifeline of a community and are considered to be the source of the safest blood and blood products for patients. "Donating is an altruistic gift and NOT a marketable commodity. This places them in a unique position, demanding special respect and care; it also places a responsibility for us to treat voluntary blood donors as VIPs. While keeping the spirits high on this day we encourage everyone to step forward towards voluntary blood donation and save lives." says Dr Tamojit Chakraborty, Consultant, Blood Bank, Moolchand Medcity, New Delhi.
