Moscow's Non-Oil Exports to Middle East Up 42% in 2021

Between January and August 2021, Moscow exported USD 1.4 billion in non-resource non-energy goods to the Middle East, up 42% from approximately USD 1 billion in the first eight months of last year, according to Moscow's deputy mayor for economic policy and property and land relations Vladimir Yefimov.

Local companies sell a wide range of products in the Middle East, from cosmetics and mineral water to high-tech equipment. "This year, we have seen industrial products drive the growth in Moscow's non-resource non-energy exports to the Middle East," Yefimov says. "The agro-industrial complex reported sales to the region of USD 878.8 million, and industrial goods accounted for another USD 562.4 million. If you dig into the numbers, however, you see that industrial exporters saw their sales to the region more than double year-on-year, while agro-industrial sales were up just 19.3%," he explained. The capital city's exporters sell to all 15 countries of the Middle East. In fact, Moscow accounts for 10.5% of Russia's total non-resource non-energy exports to the region. Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Israel account for 64.4% of Moscow's sales to the Middle East.

"Plastics and plastic items, electrical devices, communication equipment, optics, measuring equipment, and medical devices are the top sellers in the Middle East. Sales are up in almost all of these categories," says Alexander Prokhorov, head of Moscow's department for investment and industrial policy.

According to data from the Mosprom Center for Export Support, Moscow-based companies exported USD 81.6 million in plastics to the Middle East, USD 26.1 million in electrical devices and communication equipment, and USD 10.2 million in optics, measuring equipment, and medical devices.

In spring 2021, the Mosprom Center sponsored a business mission to the Middle East for local companies, including manufacturers of cable products, lithium-ion batteries, non-destructive testing equipment, inspection equipment, and equipment for laboratory tests, as well as a service provider that designs and constructs modern energy systems.

To help local companies increase their sales to the region, the Center's experts are also planning two business missions to Dubai for 2022: one for industrial companies and one for companies in the agro-industrial sector. The events will be tied to two of the world's largest trade shows, Expo 2020 Dubai and Gulfood 2022. Companies interested in participating in either event can find the application on the Mosprom website
