Mother Power comes to Weymouth

Support group empowers mothers and others who struggle with a loved one's substance abuse issues.

Weymouth, MA (July 2, 2010) - The National Library of Addictions (NLA) will launch its second "Mother Power" support group in Weymouth, MA on Wednesday, July 14. The group provides support for mothers and mothers-to-be struggling with addiction in their families. It also serves to address issues that confront mothers with addicted family members.

"Mother Power is an organization founded by mothers to help their families live a drug-free life," said the NLA founder Dr. Punyamurtula Kishore. "Mother Power personifies grass roots organizing and the power of community involvement in treating addiction."

The Mother Power meetings provide an outlet for mothers and other women in the family of substance abusers to share stories and support one another. It establishes a sense of community among individuals experiencing similar situations. If there is a member in crisis, the others rally to help. There is a trained counselor to lead the conversation and is present in case anyone is in need of professional guidance. Relatives who are in different stages of substance abuse treatment are welcome in the group. Whether someone is in the throes of substance abuse, or they are trying to recover from post addiction anxiety, all are welcome.

Mother Power was established in the Malden area, however; the NLA has seen a growing need for support groups in other communities. To fill this need, the organization has decided to expand Mother Power to other regions in the state.

"The Malden group is a success and we are looking to develop the program in other areas," said Jan Mannone, Community Outreach Coordinator for the NLA. "We've come to note that there is a need in communities in the greater Boston area for groups like Mother Power. There is a genuine interest in Weymouth, Quincy and other areas in the South Shore."

The support groups will be held every Wednesday at Weymouth Medical Practice located at 884 Washington Street in Weymouth at 6pm. Call the office at (781) 337-0550 to learn more.
