Motor Trend Names Mazda3 As Best 40 MPG Sedan

The Mazda3 that Motor Trend tested has a Skyactiv 2.0-liter inline-4 engine that offers 155 horsepower.

Mazda gained this victory by engineering the engine for high efficiency with a 12.0:1 compression ratio, while using 3000psi, six-hole, direct fuel injection to cool the intake charge. They also reduced friction by 30 percent. This combination gave the Mazda3 better gas mileage than the Ford Focus and they Hyundai Elantra.

The testers from Motor Trend all agreed that the Mazda3 would be the car they would most enjoy driving every day out of all the 40 miles per gallon sedans they tested. One of the testers commented, "A few hundred feet into the [drive], I could already tell it was a solid car."
