Nashville Hispanic Community Honors Drug-Free Day

The Hispanic community of Nashville is having a family day complete with bounce houses, food and even information on the truth about drugs.

Drugs are a problem in all communities. According to the UN, an estimated 210 million people internationally consume illegal drugs. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations said, "Governments have a responsibility to counteract both drug trafficking and drug abuse, but communities can also make a major contribution."

So to honor the day declared by the United Nations as "Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking," the Nashville Hispanic Community has invited the Foundation for a Drug-Free World (DFW) to participate in the Hispanic community's family day by distributing booklets called The Truth About Drugs.

The Truth About Drugs is a series of 13 educational booklets which cover the major "drugs of choice" and are presented in a straightforward manner to educate young people on their actual effects. The DFW website contains the full text of these booklets, which were specifically written for young people, but contain facts adults need to know as well.

Written in plain language, easy to understand, and available in 22 languages, this information explains the physical and mental effects of drugs on a person. It tells true stories of people who have used drugs and became addicted to them. If someone is trying to push a drug on you, or if you are considering using a drug or are already using it, or if you know someone using drugs, check out this site so you have all the information you need to make an informed decision.

DFW created these booklets to educate young and old alike on the dangers and effects of drugs. "These booklets show the truth that people need to hear," says Brian Fesler who coordinates the DFW program locally.

The Family Day event will be held in the McDonalds parking lot on Bell Road, off of I-24 from 1-5pm on June 20th. All are welcome to attend. For more information or to obtain a copy of the Truth About Drugs visit www.drugfreeworld.org.
