National Water Safety Month: New Drowning Prevention Brochure Released

Houston, Texas, April 26th 2010 - Swimming and other water re-creative spare time are more and more popular around the United States. In recognition of this, a never-ending public education on water safety practices becomes a necessity.

The National Recreation and Park Association in conjunction with the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals and the Independent Pool & Spa Service Association have declared the month of May 2010 as the National Water Safety Month. It will be commemorated through educational programs, public service declarations, governmental announcements, pool supplier sales promotions, and the distribution of water-safety-related documents. This event aims to prevent the public from drowning, recreational water illness and unintentional injuries.

As part of the National Water Safety Month and to cheer all Americans to protect their beloved children from unwitting injury, the Pool Safety Nets Organization is launching a new brochure about swimming pool hazards, water safety rules and drowning prevention. According to James Blake, this brochure is a way to inform parents and caregivers in all the United States about steps to prevent drowning, one of the leading causes of child deaths. More than 3000 U.S. children are injured each year as a result of drowning or water related accidents, and nearly 300 children die as a result of their injuries. Nearly half of these accidents happened at home.

"Data show that 2000 children each year spend a day or more in the hospital to treat injuries that could have been prevented. In some cases, these injuries even result in irreversible brain damage" said James Blake. "Our goal is to raise parents' awareness about a major cause of child injury and how it can be prevented. I encourage everyone to take measures to keep safe the ones they love. When parents know the safety rules they can and should take to fight off children injuries, they are better prepared to care children. Acting together, we can protect our children and help them to make a success of their life".

The PSN organization encourages everyone to download the drowning brochure on its website (http://www.poolsafetynets.org/ ). It deals with the following topics:
• Facts and key figures about drowning and water-related injuries around the United States.
• Steps and ways to make a pool safer such as fences, safety covers and pool alarms.
• Tips for parents and children to ensure the safety in the pool area.
Reading the brochure allows parents to make their pool safer and gain peace of mind in and around their home swimming pool.
