NBC Live Olympics : American Missy Franklin Wins Gold 100m Backstroke

Missy Franklin wins her first gold in the London 2012 Olympics and looks set to achieve greater things in the women's swimming arena

NBC Live Olympics which has been airing the London 2012 Olympics to viewers in the United States certainly brought cheer to Americans as they watched their very own 17 year old Missy Franklin take the gold for the 100 meter backstroke. Not only did Missy Franklin win the gold medal but she also broke the American record for the event becoming the next big thing in women's swimming.

The 17 year old Franklin attends Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado. This is the same town that recently witnessed a shooting tragedy whereby 12 people were killed during the screening of the movie The Dark Knight Rises.

Franklin clocked an impressive 58.33s for gold followed by Australia's Emily Seebohm in 58.68 for silver and Japan's Aya Terakawa finishing in 58.83 for bronze.

20 minutes before the start of her 100 meter backstroke final, Franklin had just completed qualifying for the women's 200 meter freestyle finals. Between events, 14-time gold medalist Michael Phelps came over to encourage his fellow American teammate. Phelps is one of Team USA's swimming highlights as he plans to grab more gold before retiring after the London 2012 games.

The USA swim team had been making waves at the Games with a few ups and downs but it is still too early to predict the outcome for the rest of the swimming events.
