New Academic English Course Offers Path to University

New course especially for foreign students to prepare for studies in English speaking countries

London

A new course specifically designed for overseas students to successfully prepare for and apply to Universities in English speaking countries is now offered by the group of English Language Schools, British Study Centres. Included is IELTS preparation to enable students to meet the admission criteria of Universities and a new emphasis on study and writing skills. On successful completion students will have the language skills required to apply for and undertake foundation or degree courses in English speaking countries.

Santi Brea, Marketing Communications Executive, British Study Centres in London: "In offering this course British Study Centres is committed to providing the best possible chance for its students to apply to and succeed at university courses in the UK." It is emphasised that students of lower-intermediate level are required to undertake General English courses before IELTS preparation courses, which may increase the length of the course.

Resulting from an increasing acceptance of a need to bridge the gap between traditional general English courses and the needs of University students, the Academic English course follows a trend of new vocational courses teaching study and writing skills to pre university students. The Academic English course combines essential IELTS preparation with these extra courses in an economic and time efficient way in the same English learning environment. In these extra courses the student acquires note taking, researching and referencing skills and the ability to write academic essays and participate in seminars. Writing skills which are required for producing academic essays that are covered include understanding the task, paragraph organisation, sentence structure, topic sentences, coherence, essay structure and organisation, developing a topic, transition signals & hedging. The ability to produce academic writing using such skills is a significant factor of success in foundation and degree courses, where most coursework and exams require written submissions.

The Academic English course is currently available at the English school Oxford, London and Brighton at the British Study Centres schools of English. Courses may be booked from the school's website.
