To Heid comments like "this disclosure is not just an attack on America - it's an attack on the international community," made by Hillary Clinton and Palin's contention that the government should be pursuing Assange "with the same urgency we pursue al Qaeda and Taliban leaders" are completely off the mark.

As Heid points out, it's not the actual leaked information that has caused the most damage it's the fact that any information was leaked and published. What Washington has long taken comfort in is the ability to operate in secret. What that secret is simply doesn't matter; the value is in knowing nobody else will know. This is why the recent leaks have angered the elite, not because they are embarrassed about comments made about foreign leaders or even the identification of strategic sites that terrorists may now strike, it's because these leaders no longer have the security of hiding.

The fact that these leaders are trying to latch on to the more serious leaks is misleading according to Heid because all of the leaks, at their origin, are secrets and "the secrecy of any government makes it a conspirator of sorts."

Of course the government has the opportunity to go on the offensive when these leaks hit, instantly condemning them as treasonous or a threat to national security. They do a great job of deflecting the real issue that Assange is trying to present which is that with the revelation of secrets should come the realization that the government is, in part, acting as a conspirator. He's quick to point out that as a conspirator the government's best interests are not always matched to the best interests of the public and that is where the real crime lies.

What Heid really challenges the reader to do is not question the rightness or wrongness of what Assange has published but rather question why does our government find it necessary to operate under a cloak of darkness.
