New Awards Program Recognizes Companies That Serve Solo Travelers Well

No More Paying Double for a Solo Vacation

The Solo Travel Awards

The first annual Solo Travel Awards, sponsored by Solo Traveler and World Nomads, will honor tour, cruise, and packaged travel companies that have developed products and services specifically for solo travelers, with no or very low single supplements. The awards open for nominations on April 26, 2017. The winners will be announced in October 2017.

Solo travelers have long been at a disadvantage when it comes to organized or packaged travel. The travel industry has historically based pricing on double occupancy and applied a single supplement of up to 100% for those who wish to travel alone. With demographic shifts and the huge increase in the number of people choosing to travel alone, the travel industry has begun to respond. The Solo Travel Awards is designed to acknowledge companies that are serving the solo market well, and to motivate others to follow suit.

I founded Solo Traveler eight years ago, and at that time few companies welcomed single travelers without charging a single supplement of up to 100%. That has changed, and we're thrilled to work with World Nomads to present these awards and recognize companies that treat solo travelers well.

Solo Traveler, a website and community where people who share a passion and/or desire for traveling alone go for tips, advice, and encouragement. Founded in 2009, it currently enjoys a monthly readership of over 125,000 and a Facebook community called the Solo Travel Society with more than 215,000 avid travelers. New content is published five days per week offering recommendations for solo-friendly destinations, tips on how to travel solo and do it safely, musings on what it means to travel solo, and how to save money while traveling alone. The three pillars of the site's mission are inspiration, information, and advocacy.

World Nomads is a fast-growing online travel company that provides inspiration, advice, safety tips and specialized travel insurance for independent, volunteer and student travelers traveling and studying most anywhere in the world. Their online global travel insurance covers travelers from more than 150 countries and allows you to buy and claim online, 24/7, even while already traveling.  While they are not a healthcare provider, their insurance focuses on what is really important to the traveler: emergency medical and evacuation costs, baggage, trip cancellation costs, dental and personal liability (depending on the customer’s country of residence ... please read the policy wording for full details on what is covered). They also cover more than 200 adventure activities and tech gear. Their policies are underwritten by a global suite of premier-tier insurers and emergency assistance providers, making them the No. 1 choice for many of the world's leading adventure and youth travel brands.
