This Sunday, +Bishop Curry will dedicate St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church in Apex. Located at 2172 N. Salem Street, St. Elizabeth's is a mission church of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. The small congregation ranges in age from under two years to over 80, and shares Sunday worship and potluck brunch each week, study group at 7 pm Wednesday evenings (including, currently, Food and Faith: Practicing the Presence of God), and singing the church's evening service, Compline, at 8pm most Wednesdays as well.

Even before its official naming at the beginning of this year, the people of St. Elizabeth's began making their presence known in the community through weekly collections and donations to Western Wake Crisis Ministry; their total offering now exceeds three tons. The congregation and their Vicar, the Rev. Sarah Ball-Damberg, are exploring new possibilities for worship and ministry within the Episcopal tradition. In particular, they have been joining in "paperless" singing, which actively involves the whole congregation in song.

"Singing is a way of involving the whole body in prayer and worship--the individual's body, and the greater body of Christ as represented by the congregation," says the Rev. Ball-Damberg. "We started small, but have grown to sing in three and even four-part harmonies on occasion. Although none of us is a trained singer we make a truly joyful noise that is wonderful to hear! Both adults and children tell me that the music stays with them all week: singing helps us learn words by heart in a way that just saying them does not." St. Elizabeth's looks forward to actively loving and serving God by loving and serving our neighbors in Apex, and to continuing to welcome the Holy Spirit and celebrate Christ's love in this world.
