New Low-Cost Nanotech Sensors for Community Air Quality Monitoring: The Revolution Begins at EcoSummit

AirBase Systems, an environmental technology start-up, launches low-cost, easy-to-use air quality sensor devices for outdoor and indoor pollution monitoring at the EcoSummit 'Smart Green Economy' conference in Berlin.

AirBase Systems, an environmental technology start-up, launches low-cost, easy-to-use air quality sensor devices for outdoor and indoor pollution monitoring at the EcoSummit 'Smart Green Economy' conference in Berlin.

The product, CanarIT, combines nanotechnology sensors with Internet connectivity, via Wifi or GSM, to deliver air quality data to the AirBase data cloud. The data is made available on the Internet and via a future Subscription Alert service to mobile phones.

The first generation of devices measures Ozone (O3), NO2, Total VOC (Volatile Organic Compound), Particulate Matter (Total Suspended Particles), Relative Humidity, Temperature, and Noise. AirBase Systems' R&D team in Israel is testing other technology to be incorporated into the device, including sensors for PM2.5, Light, and Odor.

The monitoring devices are designed for municipalities, community groups, citizen scientists and individuals with health problems affected by air pollution. CanarIT can be used as an single unit, or form a network of environmental sensors (in Smart City projects, for example). Devices can be purchased directly from the company web site (www.myAirBase.com) or from an AirBase Certified Partner.

The product is a technology breakthrough for the environmental industry. Current technology, used by cities around the world, is extremely expensive, unreliable and much less sensitive compared to the new AirBase product. CanarIT, at $550 per device, will dramatically change the cost and accessibility of pollution monitoring systems.

The first customers are taking delivery of CanarIT units in April, and the company is taking orders for the next production run. Customers come from the US, Europe, Asia and Latin America, and represent municipalities, environmental consultants, utilities, telecoms, engineering consultants, weather enthusiasts, and air pollution campaigners.

Says Irad Kuhnreich, Founder and CEO of AirBase Systems, "This is a revolution in air quality monitoring. For the first time, citizens and communities can take control of monitoring their own environment and share the data with the world at large. The dramatic reduction in device cost, combined with the availability of aggregated data on the Internet, has the potential to open everyone's eyes to the damaging levels of air pollution that affect us all. With this knowledge, we can change our behaviors to better look after the health of ourselves and our children."
