New Mental Health News Radio Network Podcast, Suicide Nation, Tackles a 'Staggering Public Health Problem in This Country'
Clinical Psychologist, Suicidologist and creator/host of new Mental Health News Radio Network podcast Suicide Nation, Dr. Heather-Ayn Indelicato, says, 'Suicide is a national crisis that is lacking the candid, authentic and in-depth dialogue needed for change.'
WAYNESVILLE, N.C., May 21, 2019 (Newswire.com) - Suicide Nation was created by Dr. Heather-Ayn Indelicato ("Dr. I") I to address the topic of suicide. The podcast aims to dispel myths and to provide accurate information about the topic of suicide, as well as to offer understanding and hope about this very critical issue.
Dr. I is a Clinical Psychologist and Suicidologist who works with high-risk populations. She co-ordinates the Zero Suicide Grant Program at a hospital on the Navajo Reservation and runs community prevention programs on a Navajo radio station. Dr. I has created prevention efforts with Traditional Healers and she has developed curricula to teach medical professionals how to assess and treat patients expressing suicidal ideation and/or demonstrating high-risk behavior.
Dr. I said, "Suicide is a staggering public health problem in our country. Despite the pervasive coverage of suicide in our news and on social media, this country’s narrative on suicide and suicide prevention is greatly limited in scope and often, does not convey the profound complexities associated with suicide. We must be willing to discuss suicide and suicide prevention in more honest and straightforward ways if we hope to change this tragic crisis. There is so much stigma, shame and guilt attached to suicide. “We cannot afford to ignore the problem. All of us need to get involved.”
Suicide Nation is a much needed intervention; suicide is currently the tenth cause of death in the United States and the second leading cause of death for people ages 15-24 (CDC, 2016). In the past ten years, suicide rates have increased nearly 30%, almost doubling in rural areas. NIH (2017) reported that 10.6 million adults aged 18 and over reported having serious thoughts about trying to kill themselves, and, that 1.4 million adults made a non-fatal suicide attempt during the past year.
The podcast is for everyone; professionals and laypeople, teens, adults, family and community members including health care professionals, first responders and military personnel, persons with lived experiences, loss survivors, attempt survivors, and all individuals committed to learning more about suicide and suicide prevention. We will share risk factors, resources, and innovative prevention practices in order to build a community of hope. Topics will be addressed with honesty and compassion.
Suicide Nation will air 2 times per month. Each episode will run between 20 and 30 minutes. Listeners can expect candid conversations about suicide, interviews with professionals, along with shared experiences of loss survivors. Guests will include researchers, clinicians, members of high risk groups, military, Native American and American Indian (NA/AI) community members, LGBTQ, writers and artists, as well as family and clinician loss survivors, attempt survivors, and individuals who wish to share their personal stories.
Suicide Nation Podcast will also provide a supportive forum for loss survivors, many of whom have described their grief as a ‘minefield’ rife with jarring and unpredictable pain.
Dr. I said, “Suicide is preventable. There are often warning signs indicating that someone may need help. If you think someone is considering suicide there are ways to provide support. Suicide rates are alarming, but, with committed efforts in our communities – we can all make a difference.”
